Set right after the great war, a young girl is in love with her teacher, but discovers something strange and terrible about him.

Review:
Well! This was a whirlwind of a story and even though it's only around a hundred pages, it certainly packs a punch.

It's a very difficult book to discuss without giving anything away, but I loved the themes of human nature, and especially how some people believe they are right and how far they are willing to go for what they believe. I also liked how something that happens, which I can't talk about, emphasises what can happen to people when they're survivors of war.

I also really enjoyed our main character, Shirley. She's young and a bit foolish at times, as only young people can be, but she's also clever and sure of herself, in a time when that's frowned upon. One can't help but enjoy a character like that.

In addition to all of this, the writing is beautiful. I love how it manages to ground something that is a bit out there and somehow make it plausible and realistic, at the same time as keeping the magic in the words. It was a joy to read.

I would really recommend this to anyone who enjoys science fiction and wonderfully weird stories.
